Reading Skills Stories

A collection of levelled stories for adult EAL learners in interactive digital and printable PDF formats. Using real images in familiar contexts, the stories build oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, and vocabulary in ways that respect adults’ backgrounds and life experience.

Initial Sounds

A set of 10 phonics-based stories for Foundation Literacy / CLB 1L learners. The stories focus on initial consonant sounds and basic vocabulary, in interactive and printable formats that build phonemic awareness and early sight-word recognition.

Using a clear problem–solution format, the stories focus on short vowel sounds and common digraphs (such as ch and ck) and are available as interactive digital stories, printable PDFs, and digital blending activities to build phonemic awareness, blending, and early sight-word recognition.

Canadian Indigenous Readers

A series of stories by and about Indigenous creators in Canada. Each title in The Maker Series is available as an interactive digital story and a printable PDF with flashcards and simple pre-reading vocabulary support. These readers help adult EAL learners build reading fluency and vocabulary while learning about Indigenous culture and contemporary practices in a respectful, strengths-based way.

Supporting Resources

The introductory video for Canadian Indigenous Readers – The Maker Series features Suzanne, a member of the Tahltan First Nation in northwest British Columbia.
